Body Myths Busted!

Sup. Screw you applied maths!! *sigh*

Anyway, just feel like posting something interesting. Found it on Girlfriend website few days ago. Check it out.

Body Myths Busted!

The more you wash your face the less chance you'll have acne. FALSE!
Acne does not discriminate against face washers or non-face washers. Some people never wash their faces and never have acne, while others will spend thousands of dollars on expensive cleansers and treatments and still have ye old zits hanging around.
However, don't despair and give away personal hygiene altogether. If you have acne, keeping your face clean can't hurt. So cleanse twice a day and keep your hair off the affected areas. Most importantly, don't start crying and calling yourself horrible names like 'pizza face' - no one else notices your pimples as much as you. If you're really distressed, talk to your doctor about anti-acne medication. Having pimples is far from great fun, but you're certainly not alone. Try to keep things in perspective, and remember, real beauty comes from within.

Getting a tan clears up your skin. FALSE!
Whoever perpetrates this myth runs the risk of being assaulted by GF Beauty Editor, Sarah T. A tan might temporarily hide the redness of acne, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence that frying your face will make your skin better.
However, it HAS been conclusively proved that baking your body will give you cancer and make you age prematurely. Woot. Conclusion? Stay out of the sun during the heat of the day, ESPECIALLY if you're using prescription acne treatments like Benzac cream or the pill, because you will burn faster than a shaven polar bear in the Sahara.

You shouldn't do any exercise while you have your period. FALSE!
Absolutely no harm will come to you if you play sport while you have your period. In fact, some elite sportswomen claim that they have more energy and aggression during their periods, which makes them whoop ass that much harder (AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!).
Playing sport may actually relieve some pre-menstrual symptoms; a good run might make you feel less bloated, gentle swimming could help relieve cramps, and a fired-up screaming netball match can quench your urge to commit violent crimes. Try different things and see what works for you. (Of course, it's totally fine to feel exhausted and do nothing but sleep during the week of your period too!)

When you shave your legs, the hair grows back thicker. FALSE!
Shaving cuts the tip of the hair off (the strand remains under the skin), and according to doctors, it doesn't change the texture, colour or rate of growth for hair. However, it does make the hair look and feel coarser, because it has a flat, recently cut, end.
Take care when shaving - a warm bath is a good place to do your legs, as your skin will be warm and your limbs more stable than in the shower. If you find that shaving irritates your skin, you can try waxing or depilatory creams (depending on your budget). Remember, hair is a natural thing designed to protect our skin and bits. Choosing to remove, trim or lighten hair is a personal decision, and there's no rule that says you HAVE to do it.

Running gives you a better workout than walking. FALSE!
Any workout is a good workout - the most important thing is that you find a type of exercise that you enjoy and can do often. If you don't like going running, take your dog for a stroll, or head to a dance class. Make exercise a part of your normal day by taking the stairs instead of the lift, and walking/riding your bike instead of making your parents drive you. Physically active people can eat more without gaining kilos (yesssssss), plus, exercising releases chemicals in the brain called 'endorphins' which make you feel damn fine.

Haircuts make hair grow faster. FALSE!
One of the number one beauty questions we get at Girlfriend is 'HOW CAN I MAKE MY HAIR GROW FASTER?!' Sometimes there's a sense of desperation in the typing that's frightening. Irrespective of what witch-doctors tell you about egg yolk masks, you can't make your hair grow faster. Haircuts will make your hair healthier, but will not speed growth.

Eating oily foods causes pimples. FALSE!
Research hasn't been able to prove any direct link between oily food and pimples; however eating healthy food certainly isn't bad for your skin. When you're stressed or have your period you may crave oily chips and burgers, but try to stay in control and eat sushi, fresh fruit and vegetables instead. Or try to get your mind off food completely, and go for a walk or learn that tricky piece of music you've had lying around.

Brushing your hair 100 times a day makes it extra glossy. FALSE!
Back in the day, women used to think lots of hair brushing would improve circulation to the scalp which would give you thicker hair. The truth of the matter? The old bald dude on the bus has the same scalp circulation as the cheerleader with the illustrious locks. The '100 times a day' routine is more likely to cause your hair to break than look better!

Carbohydrates cause weight gain. FALSE!
You gain weight if you eat more calories than you burn. It doesn't matter whether those calories are from carbohydrates, proteins or fats. If you ate ten times your body weight in apples each day and did no exercise, you would gain weight. Carbohydrates are the only fuel source for many vital organs, including the brain, central nervous system and kidneys, so they're an important part of your diet (they're found in fruit, bread, grains, starchy vegetables and dairy products). No food group is innately bad for you, the key is to eat a little bit of all of them in moderation. Talk to your doctor about it if you're confused.

Morning exercise is best. FALSE!
Exercise is something you should get any way you can - time of day is irrelevant! Some people find that they respond better to exercise at certain times; if you're a 'morning person' you may find that getting physical first thing helps you to stay focused and alert at school. Other people prefer to exercise away the stresses of the day in the evening. Do whatever works for you.
